Overview
Research participants are needed for functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies at the Brain Imaging and Analysis Center (BIAC). Our studies are conducted on two MRI scanners located in the Duke University Medical Center.
What is fMRI?
- Non-invasive and safe
- Uses a strong magnetic field to take pictures of the brain
- Does not involve injections or ionizing radiation
General Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must meet all participant eligibility criteria
Frequently Asked Questions
What do the experiments study?
Our experiments investigate topics in cognitive and clinical neuroscience, including:
- Visual perception
- Information storage in memory
- Decision-making and predicting future events
- Many other topics in brain function
What happens during an experiment?
Studies typically last between 1 and 2 hours. Here is what to expect during your visit:
- Orientation and Safety: You will meet an experimenter who will explain the procedures, discuss consent and screening forms, and answer your questions to ensure you can safely participate.
- Scanner Preparation: You will lie on a platform next to the MR scanner. The experimenter will center your head and place padding around the sides for comfort.
- Entering the Scanner: The platform slowly moves into the center of the scanner. You will be able to see outside using a mirror and communicate via a two-way intercom system.
- During the Session: Depending on the study, you may watch pictures on a screen, listen to sounds, count stimuli, or press buttons to make judgments. Experimenters will check in on you regularly.
- Session Wrap-Up: At the end, the experimenters will explain the study goals, show you pictures of your brain, and answer any final questions.
Note: Female subjects may be asked to complete a pregnancy test (blood serum) prior to participating. As with all research at Duke, you are free to stop participating at any time.
How much will I get paid?
- Compensation Rate: Most studies pay between $10/hour and $20/hour.
- Payment Requirement: Duke University requires us to collect your Social Security number for payment processing.
Who cannot participate in the studies?
You cannot participate if you have implanted metal that could be affected by a strong magnetic field. You are excluded if any of the following apply:
Cardiac pacemaker or defibrillator
Insulin or infusion pump
Cochlear, otologic, or ear implant
Any implant held in place by a magnet
Tissue expanders (plastic surgery)
Implanted catheter, clamp, clips, valves, or other metal
Tattoos or permanent makeup above the shoulders
- Shrapnel or metal fragments
- Ever had metal removed from an eye
- Ever worked as a metal worker
Note: Additional exclusion criteria may apply depending on the specific study. You can review the BIAC research screening form before your visit.
Will I receive a medical evaluation?
No. BIAC research does not serve as a medical evaluation and provides no direct medical benefit.
- Scans used in research differ from diagnostic clinical scans.
- Scans will not be read by a radiologist and cannot be used to diagnose or treat any medical condition.
- If you need an MRI for health reasons, please consult a physician.
